A5 Haze – Origin, Sister Plant and Offspring
A5 Haze is a clone from Northern Lights #5 and male A of Original Haze. According to ACE Seeds, the breeders Karma and Yo Sammy rescued the mother plant and shared it.
Anyone who reads “Thai A5 Haze” can easily take it for the same plant. It is not: Thai A5 Haze is a separate cross by ACE Seeds, in which A5 Haze was crossed with a Thai from Chiang Mai. Nor is the A5 Haze × Thai male behind Bandaid Haze #7 documented as the same line.
A5 and its Sister C5
A5 has a sister: C5 Haze, from Northern Lights #5 and male C. According to an experienced grower, C5 is the mother of well-known Dutch strains such as Jack Herer, Super Silver Haze and Mango Haze and gives them the lemony note these strains are known for. The same grower describes A5 as woodier, spicier and more like incense. Because male A is lost, in his account, the A5 cross cannot be made again; what exists are cuttings of the one plant.
Who Kept A5 Haze Alive
According to ACE Seeds, A5 Haze still exists because the breeders Karma and Yo Sammy kept the mother plant and shared it. ACE Seeds thanks both of them by name in its own strain description. Karma Genetics has used the plant in its own crosses; as early as 2009, Karma handed out seed under the name “A5 X Mirakel” as a free extra.
Fake Cuttings Sold as A5
A post in the ICMag Haze discussion thread warns that over the years, cuttings passed on under the name A5 Haze were sometimes a different plant. Who wrote the post cannot be told for certain from the way it is quoted. For growers this means a cutting labelled A5 is only as good as the chain of hands it went through.
Lines in Which A5 Haze Lives On
A5 Haze appears in several documented crosses. A5 plants pollinated in the same room by a Thai plant gave the line A5 × Mirakel Thai, and from it the father of Bandaid Haze #7. ACE Seeds crossed A5 Haze with a Thai from Chiang Mai to make Thai A5 Haze. Karma Genetics crossed Bandaid Haze #7 with A5 Haze to make BA #75 Haze. And Doc D’s 2022 strain list includes an “A5 Haze clone” as a crossing partner in its own right.
