Beginnings and name

JGL’s entry into breeding was unplanned. An overlooked male plant pollinated an entire grow – and from that unwanted seed came the decision to breed seriously. The name goes back to this episode: a friend named the lab „JahGreenLabel“ because it seemed the „green god“ had sent the seeds. His first own cross combined a South African Durban male with a Citral clone.

Focus

JGL works across two closely connected fields: preserving pure landraces and developing CBD-rich lines. Both follow the same goal – to safeguard genetics that have almost disappeared from the commercial market, and to keep them available as regular seeds so growers and breeders can continue working with them. An important source here is the Vibes Collective, a private forum where growers worldwide work on preserving landraces.

Releases and network

His strains have appeared through several seed banks. Besides the Underground Seed Collective, JGL has worked with the Tropical Seeds Company and is in exchange with Cannabiogen. At Spannabis he first appeared as an exhibitor together with Tropical Seeds. His breeding work has been documented since 2011 in the OpenGrow forum; today he consolidates his output under his own name as JGL-USC.

Approach: documentation and plant health

What stands out is JGL’s commitment to verifiability. His lines are characterised by lab analysis – for example via GC-FID full-spectrum analyses for cannabinoids and terpenes. His mother plants are routinely tested by RT-qPCR for Hop Latent Viroid (HLVd), a latent pathogen that can weaken an entire line unnoticed. The analyses run through specialised labs (including Spectralfingerprints as well as Altus Biolabs for HLVd screening).

• Zamal CBD – CBD sativa hybrid (Z6 × Mauritius) based on the Réunion landrace, in development since 2011; chemotype Type 2 / Type 3
• Zamalmystik – based on a 1980s Zamal-Mafate line, crossed with a Dutch polyhybrid and worked to the 5th generation to shorten flowering from 18–20 to around 12 weeks (via TSC and USC)
• Double Zamal – a union of two Zamal lines, Mauritius and Mafate (via TSC and USC)
• Afghan CBD – Type 2, as a limited edition
• Senegalese – African landrace from the Africa project
• Colombian Gold ’72 and Coljam – Colombian old-school sativas
• Nepalma CBD – CBD version from the Nepalma project
