What is the Zamal CBD?

The Zamal CBD is not a landrace itself but a CBD-rich hybrid: the Zamal heritage comes via the father (Mauritius), the CBD via the mother (Z6). Already at its first release in 2015 it was one of the few high-CBD genetics available as regular seeds – unclonED, with both male and female plants. What sets it apart beyond that is the documentation: history, breeding steps and current lab profile are recorded without gaps.

The Zamal – a French landrace

“Zamal” is the name of the cannabis cultivated on La Réunion – a sativa that developed over generations far from commercial breeding circuits, on a French island in the Indian Ocean. For JGL it is a French genetic heritage worth preserving. His entire Zamal body of work is built on it, including the Zamalmystik and the Double Zamal.

The parent lines: Mauritius & Z6

The father side is the Mauritius line, preserved by the Vibes Collective – a private forum dedicated to conserving landraces. The name refers to the place of collection, Mauritius; the genetics are of Réunion origin, the same Zamal that circulated between the islands of the Indian Ocean. The mother side is a selected clone of the Z6, a CBD-rich genetic from Mr. Nice (Shantibaba). From this cross – Z6 × Mauritius – the CBD version of the Zamal emerged.

2013: bringing CBD into the Zamal

In the early 2010s, CBD-rich seed stock was rare. JGL combed through several medical genetics of the era – Z6 and Z7 from Mr. Nice, Respect and Dancehall from Reggae Seeds, Pennywise from TGA. He found what he was looking for in the Z6, with its high proportion of CBD-rich individuals. From this work the CBD line emerged, without losing the aroma and structure of the Zamal.

As early as April 2014 he recorded the chemotype in the forum: a THC/CBD ratio between roughly 1:0.5 and 1:1.2, plus notably high CBC and some CBG. This elevated CBC remained – together with THCV and CBDV – the signature of the line.

Understanding chemotypes: Type 1, Type 2, Type 3

Whether a plant produces more THC or CBD is decided already in biosynthesis. The common precursor of all cannabinoids is CBGA (cannabigerolic acid). Several enzymes compete for this CBGA: the THCA synthase converts it into THCA, the CBDA synthase into CBDA, the CBCA synthase into CBCA. Only on drying and heating do these become THC, CBD and CBC.

Which enzyme a plant expresses is controlled by the B locus with two alleles: BT encodes the THCA synthase, BD the CBDA synthase. This gives rise to the three chemotypes:

• Type 1 (BT/BT): THC-dominant.
• Type 2 (BT/BD): balanced, around 1:1.
• Type 3 (BD/BD): CBD-dominant – sought after by the legal French industrial-hemp sector.

This is exactly the point of the Z6 introgression: the pure Zamal carried only the THC trait (BT); via the Z6 the BD allele – the trait for the CBDA synthase – entered the line. That is why the Zamal CBD produces CBD today and can be deliberately steered towards Type 2 and Type 3 plants.

2015: release through the Underground Seed Collective

The Zamal CBD appeared publicly in 2015, presented as a variety originally intended for medical use with a CBD:THC ratio close to 1:1. A 4th-generation line was sold; behind the apparent homogeneity lay a deliberate distribution of roughly 50% Type 2, 25% Type 3 and 25% Type 1. In the background the work was larger: JGL had established eight Type 2 lines, of which line 7 was commercialised, while a stable Type 3 line initially remained private. The fact that they were regular seeds matters for serious breeding – they provide males and thus diversity at the PAR locus.

2025: the new edition under JGL-USC

Ten years later JGL took the project up again – not with the sold line 7, which could no longer be found, but starting from line 1 of the original work. Over three inbred generations and across a large number of plants he stabilised towards a balanced cannabinoid profile, a Zamal-true terpene expression and sativa-typical robustness – and shortened flowering considerably.

The result is a version with roughly 50% Type 2 / 50% Type 3: it secures CBD in every individual and, with the high Type 3 share, also offers an option for the French industrial-hemp sector. The shorter flowering (14–16 instead of 18–22 weeks) is due above all to the early-flowering father (Mauritius), which showed unusually dense flowers and visible resin for a male – both markers pointing to good offspring. He pulls the line into practical flowering times without losing the Zamal dominance in aroma and structure.

Lab analysis: cannabinoids & terpenes

A GC-FID full-spectrum analysis was carried out on a Type 2 selection mother in 2026 (Spectralfingerprints, analysis no. A16926-1).

Cannabinoids (total: 18.35%)

Notable is the simultaneous presence of THCV and CBDV – a rare combination that lifts this line above the crowd. The overall picture – CBD above THC, with CBC and CBG – matches the signature documented since 2014.

Terpenes (total: 3.48%)

Together this produces the spicy-floral-fruity aroma of authentic Zamal: terpinolene dominates, myrcene and limonene balance it out, caryophyllene sets the peppery finish.

Plant health: HLVd screening

The parent plants are routinely tested for Hop Latent Viroid (HLVd) – a latent pathogen that can circulate without symptoms and weaken an entire line unnoticed. Current result:

Growing the Zamal CBD: what to expect

It is a sativa, with everything that entails. It flowers in 14–16 weeks with a pronounced stretch on the transition into flower – manageable indoors for anyone used to narrow-leaf sativas (NLD). The buds are rather compact and dense for their origin, with colours that deepen towards the end of the cycle. The aroma is spicy, floral and fruity, classic Zamal, carried by a high terpene content. From the tropical landraces it inherits a robustness accustomed to humidity. Phenotypic variability is present.

Regular seeds: males & females

With regular seeds you get both male and female plants. You can select if you want to do your own breeding work, or simply pick out your finest females. With the 50/50 chemotype ratio and the strong Zamal dominance, it is also a good breeding base.
