SeedBooster® – dibber and planting tweezers

Function 1: dibber

At one end of the seed tweezers sits a pointed rod – the dibber. With it you press the planting hole to an even depth and a constant diameter directly into the moist substrate. No toothpick, no pencil, no finger. The advantage lies in repeatability: every seedling gets the same starting conditions, which standardises the success rate across the entire sowing.

Function 2: planting tweezers

At the opposite end sit the gripping tips of the tweezers. With them you pick up the germinated seed from the germination medium and place it into the prepared planting hole. A small recess at the tips – the root notch – ensures that only the seed coat is held while gripping and the germ root hangs free, without mechanical pressure.

Gentle transfer from germination to growing medium

Transplanting pre-germinated seeds is the most delicate moment of propagation. Once a seed has formed a germ root, the next handling step decides whether it becomes a vigorous plant or a stunted seedling. The seed tweezers address the three key risks in one tool: the dibber provides the even hole, the tweezers grip safely, and the notch at the tips prevents the root from being crushed.

Hygiene

The seed tweezers can be disinfected with 70% isopropyl alcohol before use – a step that reduces the transfer of bacteria and mould spores, which often enter the exposed root tissue on direct finger contact and can trigger damping-off or root rot. If needed, the tips can also be briefly disinfected between individual seeds, which rules out seed-to-seed transfer when raising different varieties in parallel.

Step-by-step use

1. Preparation: moisten the substrate (soil, coco, rockwool, Jiffy) evenly. Disinfect the tweezers with isopropyl alcohol.
2. Set the planting hole: press a hole 5–10 mm deep into the moist substrate with the dibber.
3. Grip the seed: as soon as the germ root protrudes 2–5 mm from the seed, pick it up with the tweezers – root in the notch, hold on the coat.
4. Insert: place the seed root-down into the planting hole. Coat just below the substrate surface.
5. Close: cover loosely with substrate, do not press down, moisten and place in the propagation environment (22–25 °C, 70–90% humidity, dark).

Care and cleaning

After each use, remove substrate residue with clean water, disinfect with isopropyl alcohol and let dry completely. Clean the root notch particularly carefully so that no substrate residue or plant sap remains. With proper handling, ready for use across many propagation cycles.
