What happens when seeds age?

A seed isn’t a dead grain but a dormant plant with a limited reserve. As it ages, it’s mainly the seed coat that changes: it dries out, becomes harder and therefore increasingly impermeable to water. But it’s precisely this water that triggers germination – if it can no longer get in, the seed simply “stalls”.

At the same time, the energy reserves inside slowly diminish, and the substances that set germination in motion work more sluggishly. In practice this means: older seeds germinate more slowly, more unevenly or not at all – often not because the embryo is dead, but because it can no longer break through the hard coat on its own.

What is the SeedCracker?

The SeedCracker is a small plastic screw-type nutcracker for cracking open hard cannabis seeds in a controlled way. The seed is placed in the small recess, then you slowly turn the screw down until you hear a soft crack. By gently opening the seed coat, water can get back in more easily – a crucial step to make germination possible at all with problematic seeds.

When does the SeedCracker make sense?

• For old or long-stored seeds
• For seeds with a very hard coat
• When seeds don’t germinate on their own in the SeedBooster® germination tray
• As a last chance before a seed is given up on

Important usage note

We recommend soaking the seeds before cracking. The softened coat gives way under the screw pressure in a controlled, gentle manner instead of splintering uncontrollably – this protects the delicate embryo inside.

Recommendation: Soak the seed for several hours beforehand – for example in water or directly in the SeedBooster® germination tray – and only then crack it open carefully.

How to proceed

1. Soak: Let the seed swell for several hours until the coat softens.
2. Crack: Place the soaked seed into the SeedCracker’s recess and slowly turn the screw down until you hear a soft crack.
3. Plant & moisten: Place the cracked seed into the growing medium and moisten it lightly.
