Rare Tropical Sativa from the Southern Western Ghats
The Kerala Chellakutti is a classic, true-breeding South Indian sativa with a spicy-hazy aroma profile. This rare strain originates from a remote mountain region near the border with Tamil Nadu.
Unlike many Kerala cultivars, the Kerala Chellakutti has no fruity scent. The terpene profile is reminiscent of a complex blend of spices and pepper with an underlying hazy undertone.
Kerala is the rainiest state in India. As a result, the Kerala Chellakutti tolerates heavy rainfall and is highly mould-resistant. Nevertheless, internode spacing is comparatively short relative to most tropical sativas.
The vigorous Chellakutti thrives in a warm and humid environment such as a greenhouse. Although its very long flowering time and enormous flowering stretch make indoor cultivation challenging, experienced indoor growers can also achieve excellent results.
As we carefully removed all mutated plants, hermaphrodites and weak specimens during the controlled indoor open-pollination process, growers can expect high sex stability and very few unwanted phenotypes.
The optimal light cycle for indoor cultivation is 11 hours of light and 13 hours of darkness. This allows the plants to flower somewhat faster and develop to their full potential.
The scent is very subtle at first, as the Kerala Chellakutti only begins producing trichomes late in its flowering cycle – around weeks 13 to 16 of flowering. From that point, this tropical strain begins to reveal its full aromatic potential.
Endangered Cultivar
Although the state of Kerala is known for harbouring some of India’s most potent landraces, most local landraces are threatened with extinction. In Kerala, these long-flowering varieties are gradually being replaced by faster-flowering strains. Habitat loss through urbanisation and intensive eradication campaigns have further pushed these cultivars to the brink of extinction.
Our friend from the Collector’s Collective (Coco Genes) acquired the seeds directly from local Kerala farmers who wish to help preserve this endangered cultivar. Growers with sufficient patience and experience will be rewarded with one of the rarest and aromatically most distinctive sativas currently available.
