Dayma Landrace – Pure Cannabis Seeds from Tashqurghan (Afghanistan)
Origin & Genetics
Dayma is a traditional cannabis variety from the Tashqurghan region (also known as Kholm), in northern Afghanistan near the Uzbek border. It is an unaltered landrace – not hybridized or selectively bred, but sourced directly from its place of origin. The seeds were selected from local farmers during a field collection by Baaba Qo, with the goal of preserving the genetic and cultural authenticity of this line.
The region lies in a transitional climate zone between continental highlands and desert steppe. Strains that thrive here are extremely adaptable, resistant to temperature fluctuations, and display a spectrum of hardy, traditionally grown traits.
Growth Pattern & Morphology
Dayma grows medium-tall to bushy, with strong main stems and short internodes. The leaves are typically broad, suggesting classical indica dominance, though phenotypic variation is high – typical of unworked landraces. In cold nights, many plants develop dark purple to nearly black hues in flowers and foliage.
Flowering time ranges from early October to mid-December, depending on phenotype and microclimate. The plants are adapted to late ripening and extreme environmental conditions, including cool nights, intense sunlight, and low humidity.
Resin Production & Aromas
This strain produces abundant resin, with clearly visible trichomes on calyxes and leaf tips. The aroma spectrum is complex, ranging from earthy-clayey notes to fruity-spicy tones with hints of melon, pomegranate, dark berries, and spices. Once dried, the scent may take on a slightly musky quality.
Traditional Use & Effects
In the Tashqurghan region, cannabis has been cultivated, processed, and used for generations. Resin extraction was traditionally done via dry sifting, as in much of Afghanistan. This was sometimes complemented by hand-rubbed methods preserved in neighboring regions.
Traditional descriptions of the resin experience describe it as deep, physically grounding, and mentally calming – with a slow onset and inward-moving quality, associated locally with concepts like “weight” and “stillness,” yet without being sedating.
Cultivation Notes: Germination & Winter Dormancy
Since Dayma consists of undomesticated wild seeds from original populations, germination can be irregular. In natural cycles, many of these seeds are adapted to overwinter in soil for one or more seasons, germinating only when moisture, temperature, and light conditions align.
To improve germination rates, we recommend artificial cold stratification: store the seeds at deep-freeze temperatures (−18 °C or lower) for several weeks to simulate winter dormancy. Afterwards, pre-soak for 12–24 hours in lukewarm water or on moist tissue before placing them in loose, well-aerated soil.
This process helps break natural dormancy and significantly increases the chance of uniform, vigorous seedlings – especially with landraces whose germination strategies evolved for survival, not for modern cultivation efficiency.
Benefits for Modern Cannasseurs & Breeders
- Genetic Authenticity: Dayma represents an almost untouched gene pool – a rare window into living varietal diversity that has largely resisted commercial erosion.
- Sensorial Depth: The broad terpene profile and phenotypic variation make Dayma an exciting discovery for enthusiasts seeking flavors beyond modern hybrid norms.
