Baaba Qo – Sholgar | Afghan Landrace from Northern Afghanistan
Sholgar is an unaltered landrace variety from the Sholgara District in Balkh Province, Northern Afghanistan. This original cannabis strain was directly collected by the breeder – now available at Bunkerlinge.
Origin & History
This classic landrace variety originates from the Sholgara District in Balkh Province, northern Afghanistan. The strain was documented during direct field collections by Baaba Qo in 2019 and represents a region with centuries-old cultivation traditions.
The genetic structure has not been hybridized or selectively altered, but represents a natural, locally adapted highland line. The plants are shaped by the continental climate – hot summers, cold nights, low humidity – and are correspondingly resilient.
This region has been known for centuries for resin-rich cannabis varieties that were traditionally used for hashish production. The variety embodies this authentic culture in unchanged form.
Botanical Characteristics
- Genetics: Pure Afghan landrace from Sholgara District
- Type: Regular cannabis seeds
- Height: Bushy to medium-sized with strong main stem
- Structure: Pronounced lateral branch development, short internodes
- Special Feature: Unchanged wild collection genetics, characteristic late-bloom coloration
Aroma Profile
The terpene profile is distinctive and multi-layered with dominating earthy, spicy and resinous notes. Often showing hints of motor oil or diesel – aromatically very typical for Afghan varieties from the Balkh region.
Some plants also develop sweetish-fruity undertones, especially when dried. Resin production is pronounced with large, densely populated trichomes on calyxes and leaf tips.
Cultivation & Growing
The flowering period typically lies between late September and mid-November outdoors. Indoor maturation time ranges from 8 to 11 weeks depending on phenotype. In late bloom, many specimens show characteristic color tones from dark green through purple to almost black.
Since these are non-domesticated wild seeds, germination behavior can be irregular. Artificial cold stratification (several weeks at −18°C) is recommended to break natural germination inhibition.
Seeds should then be pre-soaked in lukewarm water for 12–24 hours. This approach significantly increases chances for uniform, vital seedlings.
Traditional Usage
In its region of origin, this variety was not bred as consumer goods, but maintained as part of local life and cultivation culture. The resin obtained traditionally found application as hashish – processed through dry sieving.
The resin structure is oily, dark and highly sticky – ideal for classic processing according to traditional methods.
Breeding Potential
As a robust, climate-adapted line with natural resistance, this landrace is excellently suited as a starting point for stable outdoor crossings or targeted selections for resin production. The genetic authenticity represents a nearly unchanged gene pool.
For collectors, preservationists and those interested in ethnobotany, it embodies an authentic connection to a centuries-old cannabis culture that has survived despite political upheavals.
Packaging & Availability
The cannabis seeds are available in original packaging from Bunkerlinge and provide access to this rare Afghan landrace genetics.
Conclusion
This variety is not a commercially standardized strain, but a living relic of rural plant culture in Northern Afghanistan. Its resilience, genetic depth and aromatic independence make it a valuable resource for all who wish to experience cannabis in its original diversity.
Those interested in further Afghan landraces will find additional authentic collections in the breeder collection. Discover also other landrace genetics from various collectors.
