Qandahar – Southern Afghan Landrace with Powerful Character
Qandahar is an unaltered landrace strain from the hot south of Afghanistan, collected by Baaba Qo. It combines original lowland genetics, high resin production and a distinctive diesel aroma.
Origins & Genetics
Qandahar is a traditional cannabis strain from southern Afghanistan, near the city of the same name. The region has been a centre for the cultivation of resin-rich cannabis plants for centuries. This line was collected directly on location by Baaba Qo – without hybridisation or feminised breeding.
The genetics were shaped over many generations through natural selection and traditional farming practices. Qandahar is an authentic high-temperature landrace with original character.
Growth Behaviour & Morphology
Qandahar grows compact to medium-sized with a strong main stem, robust side branching and tight internode structure. Foliage varies by phenotype – from broad to hybrid-like. During the ripening phase, some plants turn dark green to almost black, particularly under cool night temperatures.
Flowering time is 8–11 weeks. The strain is suitable for both indoor and outdoor cultivation. Its natural resilience to heat, drought and temperature fluctuations makes it particularly well suited to warm, dry climates.
Aroma & Resin Structure
The terpene profile is intense: earthy, spicy, with notes of diesel, rubber, leather and hash. Individual phenotypes display additional musky or sweet-woody accents. The strain is strongly reminiscent of classic black Afghan resin.
Trichome production is massive: oily, dense resin glands cover flower calyxes and leaf tips – ideal for traditional dry-sifting or hand-processing. The resin is fatty, sticky and highly aromatic.
Germination Behaviour & Cultivation Notes
As Qandahar consists of non-domesticated wild seeds, germination behaviour can be irregular. In their native region, many seeds only germinate after winter – an evolutionary adaptation to harsh conditions.
To improve germination rates, we recommend artificial cold stratification: seeds should be stored frozen at –18°C for several weeks to simulate winter conditions. Afterwards, pre-soak (12–24 h) in water or on moist tissue and place in loose, well-draining substrate.
This method breaks the natural dormancy and increases the likelihood of uniform, vigorous seedlings – especially with originally selected landraces such as Qandahar.
Benefits for Modern Connoisseurs & Breeders
- Genetic authenticity: Non-hybridised, collected directly from a traditional cultivation area.
- Climate resilience: Highly heat- and drought-tolerant – ideal for challenging outdoor locations.
- Aroma & resin: Powerful diesel profile with intense trichome production – ideal for dry-sift resin production.
- Diversity & selection: Broad phenotypic variation for targeted breeding or preservation of original lines.
Conclusion
Qandahar is a southern Afghan lowland landrace with a unique aromatic profile and strong resilience. It represents genuine, untouched genetics from one of the world’s oldest cannabis cultivation regions. As part of the Baaba Qo collection, it provides breeders, collectors and resin enthusiasts access to unadulterated heritage genetics – original, robust and full of character.
